The Story of Greyfriars Bobby: Edinburgh’s Most Loyal Companion 🐾 - Kolié Fine Jewellery

In the heart of Edinburgh, just outside the gates of Greyfriars Kirkyard, stands a small statue with a big legacy. Greyfriars Bobby, a little Skye Terrier, is remembered not for fame or fortune but for something much more powerful: loyalty.

A Dog’s Devotion That Touched a City

Bobby belonged to John Gray, a nightwatchman in 19th-century Edinburgh. When John passed away in 1858, something remarkable happened. Bobby refused to leave his master's side and stayed near his grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard every day for the next 14 years.

Through cold winters and rainy Scottish afternoons, Bobby remained close. Locals were so touched by his devotion that they took care of him and even gave him an official licence and collar so he could stay beside the grave.

When Bobby passed in 1872, the people of Edinburgh came together to honour him with a memorial fountain and statue. It still stands today, a short walk from the grave he guarded so faithfully.
